Fair Trade
This is actually a continuation of the Protocol discussion going on in another post, but I think this is at the heart of the matter that's going back and forth.
Taken from the web:
http://www.greenamerica.org/programs/fai.../index.cfm
Fair Trade is a system of exchange that honors producers, communities, consumers, and the environment. It is a model for the global economy rooted in people-to-people connections, justice, and sustainability.
This has been a growing movement in RL, and I think we are seeing a spillover of this desire to be fair and do what feels right in SL. It has been for me a great learning experience.
In KittyCatS, most of us are BOTH producers and consumers, and we are all concerned about sustainability so we can keep breeding
I think what we need to remember, and I am very much speaking to myself as well, is that what we do not only affects us, but everyone else too.
People can make their own choices, and they all have consequences for better or worse. But sometimes what you do is not as important as how or why you do it. As an example I'll use the British boycott of sugar back in the 1700's.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/british/abo...y_07.shtml
Cheap sugar produced by slave labor was available but once people learned it was so cheap because others suffered, they refused to buy it. This is the undercurrent I think we are feeling. If we are a community, then there is no good for me and to hell with you. We are all in it together and what is good for me should be good for you too and what hurts you, hurts me too.
So my question is this. How do we come together as a community, embrace new breeders, and work together for the benefit of all?

Noc

I'm considering my reply on the bottom line of this thread because I don't want to react instantly but really think this over ...
Then why post at all until you have considered your reply ? *scratches head*
Anyways Noc, i think with the new breeders, would be to help them improve upon the little kitty's they are making, they produced a 3t hiding a 7th, not do it for them but show how they can get the traits out, instead of the said cat going out on market very cheep and still no one buys, and gets them frustrated.
So in essence clearing the confusion around kittys trying too get them too attend the breeders classes if they still happen... Ohhh that another point for the peeps that can not get too said classes, why not record them and stick them on you tube ? so they can keep going back too it ?

Omg, Youtube would be an awesome way to not only give prospective breeders who couldn't attend the hours of a class a chance to catch up and learn in their own spare time, but also attract more people into KittyCatS with demonstrations of how amazing our community is.

I love the idea of youtubeing (is that a word?) a breeding class I have no clue how to go about it but if someone does please get in touch with me as I am planning to put together a class again soon and I would love to have it on video to help people.

You know, when I started there was no pedigree page, the Nacht boys had just started a trait chart, then Saga started one and then we got the online pedigree. (Not sure if Saga's chart came before the online pedigree or shortly after but anyway..you get the point =op) But at first, I had no clue at all what was recessive to what or even that anything was recessive to anything lol.
Imagine how different it would be without those tools and the sharing of knowledge that occurs in our community. Imagine if you figured out the recessiveness of stuff but kept it to yourself and watch everyone else struggle etc. I think in this..we are already ahead of the game compared to many RL circumstances. So lets take a moment to celebrate our co-operative successes.
I LOVE the idea of doing youtube classes! I really hope we can make that happen

I was thinking if someone could film it while I did the whole teaching part LOL Lets face it I am scattered enough I do NOT need to try to film and teach I would bet that would end up being a MESS!!

I agree with that! and I think Saga's came before the online pedigrees. I know she had been working on it for AGES but wasn't sure how to show everyone until Khea showed her how to use google documents!

RE: Fair Trade
I read the page on fair trade Noc, and it seems like a good idea in rl, but I don't see how it would work here? It would mean one group would have to buy all the kitties and sell them?
The youtube thing sounds like a great idea!
And I could swear there was someone before Saga that figured out how breeding works, but I can't think of his name........Either way it's a definite necessity and greatly appreciated.

LOL - exactly, Sanura. I was messing with notecards that became outdated before they were circulated in the community, and then new versions and the endless questions from all those who were still stuck with the old versions etc.etc...
So yes, Khea showing me Google Docs was indeed the great break through ;-)
-However - which is the main thing in this thread - it's not so much about the Docs, or how everything works, or who figured it out etc... It's about how we SHARE THE KNOWLEDGE!!!
When I started in KittyCats, most people didn't share. Most people kept the stuff they figured out to themselves, or at least the main part of it.
Sure, lots of people had probably already figured out everything before I made my Google Docs - I don't claim "copyright" on any great "discoveries" or anything - the only real difference is the sharing. I started bugging people for help on this project, and many cooperated. Others told me I was crazy and expressed concern if I was to make all this knowledge public. Called me crazy and whatnot, and stopped giving info because they felt it was better kept in private.
-But LOTS of other people joined in, and that's why the Docs are there today! -Not because of me - if I hadn't made them, someone else probably would have at some point - No, they are there because people share. People send me info, knowing very well that it will be made public - and yet they SHARE. Some people have sent me info regularly for the past 1½ years - others send me their first notecard while they're almost afraid to say "Uhmm, I think I may have found something, will you look at it?" - and I look, and I reply, and I talk to them and I update the charts. That's my contribution to the sharing.
So when Noc asks: "How do we come together as a community, embrace new breeders, and work together for the benefit of all?" - my answer is this: KEEP SHARING. Keep gathering info, keep making new projects, keep sharing your knowledge for the benefit of all. It grows more and more - some people make documents: The KittyCats history, the KittyCats Auction schedule, my own docs... -Other people do classes based on the genetics of KittyCats that are now common knowledge because we all share, yet others make events and contests where KittyCat-people can gather and have fun, others make tools and fun stuff for our KittyCats both in SL and on the web - like Tad's Build-a-Cat and such - and all this helps creating a community of sharing.
Suuure, all roses have their thorns, and we also gossip and bash each other and get mad and grit our teeth now and then, also while we SHARE our opinions here on the forums, lol... But all in all, the KittyCats community is one of the best communities I have been in, in my entire 6+ years in SL. This is not because of you, or because of me, or because of this guy or that girl or the one next door - but because of all the SHARING between them all.
That's what a community is, and that's what we're doing.
Keep it up, guys :-)
