RE: Getting "pissy" about the left out older breeds of kitties
Skippy, breed what you love and don't worry about what's popular or new. I was surprised with a balinese cream lynx, but for that I would still be devoting myself to my favorite snowshow chocolates and chateau 3 spots. I sometimes get frustrated becuase I will want to introduce some new traits and can't find the chateaus anywhere. Also, my new love is the burmese sable (so rich and chocolatey!) and I have a hard time finding them as well. So don't give up, soemone will walk in and see your kitties and they will be their favorite too!

RE: Getting "pissy" about the left out older breeds of kitties
Recently I found my perfect Oci Cat the Oci Blue and bought it for a fairly high amount knowing when I finised this line of kities they would go for a steal but I didn't care because I love this fur.
Before I didn't mind the Oci's much but I was so in love with that Oci with his tanned feet which comes back in it's nose <3
So I decided I want to breed this Oci.
This was a new fur and now I saw a couple of them for 1000L I mean the latest and the greatest is really a nasty booby trap.
Lucky enough I don't care because I really love this Oci no matter what it does on the market and I will happily breed in the traits I think works so well with that fur.
So high end breeding *sighs* I leave that up to the people who know what that is.
I breed only what I want and the market I don't care about I have a take it or leave it mentality LOL
If there was no market at all I would still breed because I just love KittyCatS.
And I agree Bea Mysterious eyes with a big pupil can be so awesome frankly that is my perfect eye

RE: Getting "pissy" about the left out older breeds of kitties
It's very good to breed what you love. But for anyone with a larger amount of cats it can be quite costly, if the cats you love arent ones that sell so well.
Clearly if the cost is no issue it doesnt matter, but, if it is, I think its important to maybe split up your cattery in some way. Like 70% of the cats are the loved ones and 30% are some projects that follow the market trend to make a little money to pay for your loved kittens.
And I dont understand why there seems to be so many people against high end cats. Not everyone breeds for the same reasons. My only motviation for breeding kittycats these days are that I have many friends in the community so i enjoy the social aspect of it, but for breeding wise I am in it for the competition of delivering beautiful new kittens. And I dont mean like a 1 traited new fur. Although I've sold that too a few times. But that is part of the competitive side of it for me, because the better I do financially, the more i can spend on a new trait or a fabulous cat to put into my breeding program and continue be competitive in my breeding.

I'm not against high end cats I just don't know a clear definition of what that is.
My goal is to bring traits together I love and think work well together and most of the time my buyers like these combinations as well.
Why high end to me is completely subjective and highly depends on the taste of the buyer.
It is the same as finding a definition for a pretty cat, one the whole community loves and desires I just think that is not possible.

I agree with Rocky, part of the fun is the challenge of creating a marketable well loved kitty. That's part of the reason I, so far, have refused to buy any shown Bali furs because I want the challenge of pulling them out from behind other furs or breeding my one lovely raffle Bali Lilac to get them out. I do want to eventually create the newer or higher selling cats, and sure I could just blow some lindens I don't have to buy an expensive cat then sell all it's babies at a high price as well, but where's the fun in that? Of course, once I get to the level of amazing creation that many of you are already at and am able to sell my kitties for a fair and high price THEN I can start buying more/better kitties!

A high end cat for me is a well-traited cat with a newer trait(s) that many people would want and is willing to pay for it. Like having a high end car in RL, say a Ferrari, the desirablity of owning one, the rarity, and the performance drives the price up for that car.
Newer traits are always in demand and desirable, atleast in the world of competitive breeding, and performance would be the actual breeding value of the cat.
Personal preference plays a lesser part when it comes to high end cats in my opinion, because to make a high end cat with both value in itself (high price) and with high breeding value (good to get into your breeding program) you are somewhat constricted to having newer traits, especially fur and eye.

Yes I agree, if we can have mutiple rare/new traits in one cat we have a better short cut in our breeding programs.
But for example as with whiskers I especially like plush and avoid the more recessive whisker so if a more recessive whisker is present in such trait combination I likely not buy the kitty so in such case taste matters as well.
The whiskers of the kitty have a prominent place in the expression of a kitty while a tail matters less to me eventhough I prefer a long tail over the short tails.

RE: Getting "pissy" about the left out older breeds of kitties
I am glad to see that pretty much everyone has the general thoughts as to breed what you love and don't worry about what others say. I guess I just needed to vent because I just got tired of hearing that my cats were to pricey for non popular older breeds. I loved reading your favorites and what you like to do with your kitty's!
Everyone has made great points here, I too try to breed the newer traits into the older kitty's just to see how they will look, it's fun it keeps my mind busy and I probably will continue to do this for a long time!
As for selling, I will sell at what I feel are worth the price due to my time to get that "older" breed to look the way I planned it...and thankfulllllly now with the boxes having images I (and all of us) can hang on to the older ones!
I admire those that breed the cats with the newer traits into simply awesome, higher priced kitty's you all amaze me especially when I see them go for great prices at the auctions or on the bid boards...I don't have anything against them I own a few myself and paid dearly for them and have sold some at great prices and then again I have bred a "higher end" cat that nobody gave a second glance at. Sometimes I think I could create the ultimate cat and nobody would buy it but hey that's not why I breed anyway! lol
I guess to each their own and that's a good thing too!
See ya around the grid !

RE: Getting "pissy" about the left out older breeds of kitties
I breed what I love but I do try to go for a unique combo, mixing new with old. As almost everyone who knows me knows and can tell you I am a sucker for soft fold ears so I put them on nearly everything I breed, luckily there are others who share a love of the cats I've bred so I am able to get a fair price.
I do think many people will overlook a cat that isn't their ideal because of one small thing, be it a fur, eye color ect. and forget that part of breeding is putting together the traits and fur combos that you want. I've bought cats who had a single trait I wanted in order to be able to push it into another line.
