RE: How much would you have lasted in this business?
If your in Kitty Cats to make money, your in the wrong business! lol You really have to be in for the love of the kitties. I used to breed for the big money and I've given that up to breed the PRETTY cat. The couture kitty cat. Much less stress that way :-) We have owned a kitty sim for 2 years now about to go full sim next month and i'd say business is great. Saying that, we do not make money off our sim. We have it set where it is so our store owners make money. We have the most auctions in kitty cats and the cats sell well at all our auctions. We rely on the new person coming in because as somebody said up there if your an established breeder you have most all the cats out there. There are new people coming every day and we welcome them with open arms. :-) Far as what you price your cats for, that's up to the person. Happy breeding guys and hopefully see you at Secret Smile.

RE: How much would you have lasted in this business?
The KittyCatS kibble costs me wayyyy too much every month, and my dear husband thinks that I am wasting crazy money. Even so, its as fun a hobby as any other, and for me, it will never be a money making business.

I have been breeding kittycats for at least 4 years. It's not easy to make any business of it cuz of what Ivy said. There are so many more kitties than people who want to buy them. I would guess that most of all our sales come from people who are new and have the interest to buy cats. So although I have been in this business for 4 years or a lil bit more I would call it a type of hobby now rather than business cuz I just don't make the profit I used to a few yrs ago. I don't buy many starters anymore either to try to get new traits out of them cuz even if my cat had a new trait hidden by the time I did it and put that on a nice cat it will be not worth much anymore due to time taken to do it. Buying the starters is a bit like a lottery with everyone hoping their cats hide a new trait but most will not have anything. I tried a few times, never found anything and don't try that lottery now. I just keep it as my hobby =)

Hi, Minx. Thanks for the reply. I also now believe that this is a hobby. I was introduced to KittyCats. I was told it is a business. So I thought that this is a business. But now I understand that this is a hobby, not a business.

The market is flooded, and only the newest recessive traits will sell. Like others, I found that even if I got a recessive new trait, by the time I had a decent cat to sell, the "new" trait was out of fashion. So, for me, it is just a hobby with a goal of cuteness. I am reducing my number of breeding cats, and planning to just enjoy the non-breeders that I have already stocked.

Thank you very much for your reply, Oselkhandro. You're right, it's more of a hobby. This is a hobby that can be profitable. It's not a business.

I always liked sharing new traits with friends and my friends have shared new traits with me. For me it wasn't all about the money. It's about sharing gifts that make my friends happy, and the joy I feel when my friends share with me.

The market is too flooded, and too fickle to get rich and in most cases to break even. But if you share your kitties for a lower price to put a smile on someones face or make their day, then you're all the richer for it.

Enjoy what you do, and don't let others take that away from you.

Thanks for your answer, Devilness. Your response is very emotional. Now I understand what is KittyCats.

It is too hard to keep up with the people who are fortunate enough to be able to have large cattery's & be able to breed to get all the new traits! I just enjoy breeding for my own pleasure ... so don't feel bad...just have fun with it, like so many of us do. The KittyCat community is full of amazing people who can become wonderful friends & mentors.

Welcome & enjoy your kitties!

P.S. I enjoy giving away..or putting some of my special sized cats ( that I will never birth) at a low price so everyone can enjoy them...I don't think anyone minds :-)

Thanks for your reply Jelly. I have one cat from KittyCats. His name is Baron. He was my first cat from the Firestorm. He has no need of food. And he is not for breeding. I only need one cat. And I love him very much. Smile

Thanks for the support. Now that I know that KittyCats hobby - I'm not upset anymore.

Thanks for your answer, dreampoetz. I see many people say that KittyCats for fun. It's a hobby. I understand it now.

Business?

I thought I was just doing this to help Callie Cline get through med school.

Cats do vanish off my shelves once in awhile,

but I just figured they ran away.

(most likely they've figured out the menagerie squisher in my lobby,
Kayla has put out some Japanese snacks, but the cats were not fooled)

Treat KittyCatS as a hobby, use it to meet new and interesting cat fans,
just do it for the entertainment value, and its all good.

But try to make a profit off it? Good luck with that Wink

Thank you for your reply, Winter. Yeah, I thought so, because to me people are so presented CittyCats. I was taught that this is a business. But now I realize that this is not a business. Smile

It is purely for fun. Big Grin

Спасибо большое за ваш ответ, Alassariah. It's so interesting to listen to. I'm glad that in Second Life a lot of good people. Sociable people. In SL there are a lot of fun. There are many KittyCats and love them. Now I know what it means KittyCats. Breed the cats, I don't want to. But I have a cat Baron. And probably me along with it I will sometimes walk to places of KittyCats.

Thanks for your answer, baycitydude. First and foremost, loving cats. That's what's important. Because it's not a business. It's a hobby. And I now understand.

Someone mentioned the joy of putting a smile on people's faces by giving them sweet kitties at a low price. I second that! I actually enjoy just gifting cats on occasion..I have so many boxes, and I would rather see them loved and welcomed.

RE: How much would you have lasted in this business?
Interesting thread. Is Callie Cline going to school to be a medical doctor, or a veterinarian? ROFL

Seriously though, I was thinking about this myself..... I went out cat shopping, and I have to admit, I was a bit surprised. A lot of the cats out there are priced real high. I saw a cat for 40K! 200 RL dollars! That's RL rent, food for a week, car payment IRL, etc... Although I do love these cats, and think the world of them, at the end of the day, they are a digital cat. And there is no way I can justify spending 200 RL dollars on a digital cat.

With that said, there are so many stunning cats. And some people really love, adore the LE costume cats... The issue is, the LE costume cats, as well as some other cats out there, are out of reach for the normal Second Life user. Especially if you are a big Megapuss fan like I am.... It is not rare to see LE megapuss going for 20K, 30K, most go for about 15K.... Now, lets think about this.... 15K, we'll take the smaller of all the numbers. This is about 60 real life dollars. Now, think about that for a minute.... 60 real life dollars. Lets be generous, and say that the typical second life user makes 20 dollars an hour after taxes IRL... A person would have to work, in real life, 3 full hours just to afford the cat.... That is insanity. And that's the low end of the LE megapuss. Again, at the end of the day, they are digital cats... Spending 3 full hours of work on a digital cat is insanity. And this is generous. The average SL user probably makes more along the lines of 15 dollars an hour. Some less....
I also know many are disabled. A megapuss LE for a disabled person is half their earnings for the month... LOL Seriously, the price on cats are crazy...

I went to a sim and saw a pink chateu for 6 grand.... What is 6 grand? That is about 24 RL dollars! 24 RL dollars on a digital cat! 2 hours of RL work for the average SL user... Maybe an hour and a half. That's crazy talk.... On top of all the other SL needs, IE, avatar accessories, land, etc...

In reality, and this is very sad, the KittyCats market is really only for breeders to get cats to breed.... People do not buy many cats, cause quite frankly, the cats are just over priced for many. Now, if you enjoy the normal sized kitties the most, then you are probably good... But, for someone like me, who loves Megapuss, it really is out of my reach. I adore LE cats, however, LE cats are out of my grasp, due to the high cost of them as discussed above. People would buy more cats, if the price of them were not so tremendous. But reality is, for many, and I am included in that, the cats we want are just simply out of reach.

RE: How much would you have lasted in this business?
This is like complaining that getting all the TV channels is too expensive. There are luxuries and conspicuous consumption, and there is a basic package for the average person who can't afford the money or time for the extras. KittyCatS gives away an average of three free cats a year. Demanding that their customers who put time and money into coaxing the cats to produce something desirable be limited to selling it for no more than a certain amount is ridiculous. "Shame on you, Mr. Martin, for putting 'Game of Thrones' on HBO where I can't watch it just because HBO paid for it."

The people selling them spent a whole lot of money buying the same as everyone else and sorting through their random results to offer their prize rolls to the connoisseur who would rather spend a large chunk on purchasing the prized mega instead of buying a whole lot of boxes and hoping to get lucky.

You get what you pay for. Buying from the KittyCats! vendors, if you buy one box, you get one random chance at a a traited LE and/or special sizes. If you buy 1,000 boxes, you get 1,000 chances. If you get a really nice one you can offer it for whatever price you please. It's your cat.

I have seen other breedables go for 250,000 lindens. If someone has the money and wants a product, it will sell.

Loving the cattery! Thank you KittyCatS!

RE: How much would you have lasted in this business?

If Donald Trump collected KittyCatS then there would be a lot less
dust collectors sitting by the side of the road at the KittyCatS mall

I used to think 5k was a crazy pricetag. Those were the cats I never would
want to sell, I just liked to look at em up there and the 5k pricetag was
just a novelty goof.

But I put a Royal teacup on a shelf once with a 5k pricetag
and SOMEBODY BOUGHT IT. I was quite sad!

So yah, you can price em out of the range of the average buyer
and it will sit there forever, or until one of those lotto winners strolls by,
but those are few and far between.

Unless you got a megapuss black devil-doll cat,

which Im pretty sure do not exist since they came out before
the megapuss size was invented,

then we can talk 25k Smile

Wait... What if you had a devil-doll still in the original package?
Could you get a mega out of it now?

RE: How much would you have lasted in this business?
I am not actually demanding people sell their cats for any particular amount. I was voicing my opinion, which I have the right to do... Just like people have the right to price their cats at whatever price they wish.

I am aware of how the world works. It would just be nice if SL didn't work the same way. All that I am saying, and hate me if you want to hate me, that's your right, I don't care.... But all I am saying is that in a digital world like SL, it would be nice to be able to get the things one wants, instead of not being able to afford it, just like in RL. Obviously, that's naive of me. However, it still would be nice.... Especially when you are in deep, agonizing pain 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

1. I'm sure nobody hates you. Hate is a pretty strong word.
2. You have a right to voice your opinion as does everyone replying to it.
3. I have Hashimotos Thyroiditis, Fibromyalgia, Degenerative Disc Disease, Osteoarthritis, and a shopping list of other conditions to go with them. That does not change the fact that Linden Labs, KittyCats!, and many of the breeders here are in the (virtual) business of making money.

I am going to have a great day. I hope you do too. Big Grin

Loving the cattery! Thank you KittyCatS!
