..... and I bet how they come by them is a very closely hidden secret:huh:
No secret at all, usually they spend a lot of money buying collection cats, then open 9T pullers to mate with them, thereby doubling their number of cats and their milk/kibble bill. They then spend weeks breeding those collection cats to discover what traits they hide, in the case of most recessives this will usually mean breeding an offspring back to a parent to pull out the mutually hidden new recessive trait. In other words its not a closely guarded secret but weeks of frustration, dedication and hard work. This might actually only ever confirm they actually have the current most recessive hiding in their starter but occasionally they get lucky and have something new and then they get to drive the market on it until it becomes more widespread and natural market forces take over bringing prices down.
Of course you don't have to buy lots of collection cats, each collection cat has an equal chance to hide something new but obviously the more you buy the better your odds. I rarely test more than half a dozen but have been lucky enough to find new recessives a few times, unfortunately usually pipped to the post on discovery by a few days.
