Hi... do the kitties have to be born in-world to be eligible to be a special kitty or can they be birthed in the cattery online?

I think it is kinda cool that they combined them. Especially with the sheer amount of collectibles we have been inundated with lately. I was sorta wondering what they had up their sleeves this year as normally the surprise births are only in a 3 day range and this years was in whole week!
Is this just a costume or are there special traits possible too?
I believe it is only a costume this year otherwise they would have said so.
