Welcome Cyanide! :-)
We do indeed have a great community going on - and in the KittyCatS Addicts group there are almost always people ready to answer any newbie-questions, as we're always excited to see new people coming to enjoy the kitties <3
About budgeting - yes, that is a challenge... hehe. Most of us went a little over the top and past our budget when first meeting KittyCatS, but it should be possible to take it nice and easy. Now that you have a couple of starter-kitties, I would recommend taking a deep breath and learning things before investing in more cats - and when you do, buy from the 2nd market. While it IS possible to breed out something new and great from starters, it takes more luck than most of us possess - most times, starters breed out kittens with very few traits that no one would pay to buy. Also, you need some knowledge on KittyCatS scripting ("genetics") to be able to breed out "the good stuff" from starters most efficiently.
Luckily, most breeds of cats can be found rather cheap here and there - so, decide what you like and what you want with your kitties, and start browsing. Do you want to breed and sell cats - or just have a few for fun and not bother selling? Do you like a particular breed, or are you in love with them all? Do you want "good cats" (=valuable stuff) or those that are cute, though worth very little?
A word of warning - it usually takes investment & knowledge to start breeding the valuable stuff. Some people start doing breedables to make money, but most get sorely disappointed. Don't count on getting rich - sure, some are lucky and breed out some WHOA-kitten - but it is few. I do not mean to discourage you or anyone else, on the contrary! I just usually tell new breeders about this "trap" to avoid anyone breaking their neck before they even get started. It is soooo sad when people get in deeper than they should, and then give up
It is much better to keep people for a much longer time <3
If you want to learn more about KittyCatS genetics, try take a look at my Google Docs - especially the beginner's guide, and after that the "Trait Talk Transcript" etc. There are also dominance-charts for furs, eyes and traits that you can use once you understand the genetics and start breeding. The links can be found in a huge thread on this very forum, and I am told they're helpful to both new and old breeders
Again, wecome to KittyCatS - and grats with your lil' ones
