Once you have a Fancie cat, it will give you a random gem with every box.
The partner can be any KittyCat (of the appropriate age, gender, etc.), so you only need one Fancie, but it costs a lot of L$ to get the first one. I collected gems when I found good deals on them to get mine and sent around L$50,000 at last Spring's prices.
