The "Kittycats Only Swappers and Givers" is well over two years old now and i can only remember a couple of issues to do with swapping ever occurring, and these incidents were certainly sorted out pretty quickly.
Personally i've never had any trouble at all, i just drop the box or kitty in IM and the other person sends back the swap so i really don't think any newcomers need have any worries about this; you'll all soon realise how very tightly knit this community is and that no one is able to get away with any kind of dodgy dealings for long.
