Check the food and cat are in the same group.

The cat will only eat when awake. If it's sleeping, there will be a little Moon icon next to Energy and you'll see the energy score go up.

Kittens sleep for 4 hours then wake (and eat) for 4. Adults sleep and wake for 8 hours.
