Why Is This Such An Important Event?

DID YOU KNOW...
  • There is a condition known as Prader Willis whose symptoms are an incessant feeling of hunger no matter what the affected person eats...It can be inherited but is often just one of many possible forms of damage after brain surgery http://abcnews.go.com/Health/kids-stop-e...d=24985106 This disorder makes it necessary for some to be removed from their homes and kept in group homes where all food is kept under lock and key. If not, they can and have literally eat until they burst. So, in order to save their children's lives, families often have to do what is Totally Against Their Nature by Denying food to their "starving" children, or worse yet, sending them to live elsewhere. This is especially hard when the child is too young to understand.
  • There is always the possibility of damage to the pain receptors during brain tumor surgery. I knew a girl who suffered from 24/7 Maximum Pain perception after one of her brain surgeries. She essentially lived on morphine but sometimes it was not enough and she had to "boost it" with numerous pots of strong coffee every day. She lived like this for 2 yrs and died at age 19. Imagine the devastation of watching a child suffering with pain that is not caused by an injury and therefore not able to be "fixed".
These are just 2 of the Many "offshoots" disorders children with brain tumors can face. But the list goes on and on because in most cases they lose all glandular function and that means the the body cannot develope as it should and the deficits are great. Panhypopituitarism, blindness, seizure disorders, diabetes insipidus are just some of the serious physical tolls...we wont even consider the emotional/social/mental tolls both they and they families are faced with.

Education, Advocacy, Research, Support (EARS) are the only weapons we have to fight for these children all over the world. But that can only happen through Awareness. Like the song says, We Are The World. We can't let the world turn deaf ears to them any more.

FACT: "NCI spends 96% of its budget on adult cancers and only 4% of its budget on children’s cancers.
In dollar terms, NCI’s funding for pediatric clinical trials is $26.4 million while funding for AIDS research is $254 million, and breast cancer is $584 million. Pharmaceutical companies don’t commit resources to childhood cancer research because the adult cancer drug business is viewed as more profitable and less risky to them"

FACT: "13,500 children 19 and under diagnosed each year in the US.
36 children diagnosed each day.
175,058 children are diagnosed each year worldwide (age 0-14)"

FACT: "In 20 years the FDA has initially approved only two drugs for any childhood cancer – 1/2 of all chemotherapies used for children’s cancers are over 25 years old Research and development for new drugs from pharmaceutical companies comprises 60% of funding for adult cancer drugs and close to zero for childhood cancers." With Our support PBTF can continue to
  • Provide education and emotional support services to families
  • Fund important medical research to eliminate the challenges of childhood brain tumors
  • Aid in early detection and treatment for kids fighting one of the deadliest forms of childhood cancer

This is the basic itinerary of events. More information is available on my PBTF Charity Weg Page http://pbtf.convio.net/site/TR/Events/Ge...fr_id=1510 and links you might find useful

Breeders and Creators are welcomed to donate cats and items for the event when we begin to collect. I will keep this post updated so you will know. Please plan
on participating and telling your friends. Its really a wonderful cause. I have been fundraising for pediatric brain tumor events for over 10 yrs and always say, "Give til it hurts. And when it does hurt, just think to yourself 'if this token gift hurts, imagine how those kids and their families feel'" Check out their website and links if you have a moment and get an idea of how much your participation means.
