"Lieutenant Uhura" of the original Star Trek. This being Black/African American History month... it's worth noting that Nichelle is one of the very inspirational figures in Entertainment, American Culture and more on many levels. Nichelle's career in Entertainment alone has included television, theater, dance, singing, and more.

She was discouraged as she was originally cast to be First Officer (role gone to Spock instead) and was planning to quit. Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke to her directly - telling her she was an inspiration to not only as a figure in racial equality, but to women everywhere, as she was the first African American woman to have what he saw to become a prominent role in television and culture - as a bridge officer on a starship.

After Star Trek, Nichelle carried on as one of the true stars in Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "dream"... becoming a very strong activist for racial and gender rights, plus an extremely strong proponent for the NASA vision of the future, and continues to to this day at the ripe young age of 82.

Thank you, Nichelle Nichols, for staying the course. Thank you, Martin Luther King, Jr., for giving her the pep talk to keep this wonderful woman on track.
