Here's the list Nyn made of the settings for shades to the best of her knowledge (not confirmed by KC but they make sense to me) :

Shade: Flair (full bright, creates soft glow - best seen in midnight viewer setting)
Shade: Glitter (full bright plus glow plus shine - neat effect)
Shade: Illume (glow - wear sunglasses for white or light furred cats)
Shade: Porcelain (shine plus possibly full bright - looks like a porcelain figurine)
Shade: Twinkle (soft glow plus shine, a nice mild look on white cats, best seen in nighttime)
Also, all shades require you have your viewer settings (preferences) set to enable them at all. If you're not seeing it, you'll need to enable Basic Shaders, and Bump Maps and Shiny.

Thank you SO MUCH for coming and getting that shot and posting it!!
Thank you Khea Karas for starting this thread on shades. It is more than a year and a half later and as a newbie I think it is very helpful. The photo example of the shades by Sanura Snowpaw and the text explanation by Bea Shamrock is excellent. Just wanted to thank you.
Thorn Witrial did pictures showing eight shades on Chateau Pink and Whites at noon and midnight:
